Whale watching

The Sapphire Coast of NSW offers the best whale watching in Australia.

Whale Watching Trips are conducted throughout October and November (charters).

In October the Eden Whale Festival celebrates Eden's involvement with whales.

The history of whaling dates back to 1843 where whaling was a major industry for the town of Eden. Whales are no longer at threat, and today we delight in playing host to these majestic creatures.

The Sapphire Coast has become a popular destination for enthusiastic whale watchers. The number of whales to our waters appears to be increasing each year.

From late September to late November each year, Humpback Whales make their annual migration southwards along the east coast of Australia, bound for Antarctica after having spent several months in the warmer waters - some mating or giving birth.

It is on their southern migration that whales can be seen at Eden, with one of the unique features of this area being able to see them feeding. At times coming into Twofold Bay, many more can be observed just off the coast, with Sperm and Killer Whales seen further out near the continental shelf.

The whale alarm sounds off at the Eden Killer Whale Museum when whales are spotted in the Bay. Although it is mainly Humpbacks frequenting our waters, Minke, Blue, False Killer's and Bryde's are becoming more common as are Southern Right Whales.
